Class Descriptions

Beaded Bag

Beaded Bag

(Cell phone or Credit card Sized)
When: Thursdays, 11th & 25th
Time: 6:00pm-8:00pm
Cost: $30.00 Plus cost of Kit and needles
Knitting beaded bags was quite popular at the turn of the 19th century.  This class will help you recreate a turn of the century inspired beaded bag with a modern practical use.  The bag can be knit in one of 3 sizes, credit card size for when you want to shop but don’t want to carry your purse, or one of two different cell phone sizes (razor style and touch screen style).  I know that the bag looks difficult; you will be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to knit with beads and how quickly you will be finished with the purse.

Materials:
Beaded bag knit with pattern (available only at Sweitzers Countryside)000 knitting needles

Homework – prior to 1st class
You will need to string 2 yards of seed beads (the packet of single size small beads) onto the pearl cotton.  To do this you will thread your pearl cotton through the beading needle, which is taped to the back of the picture in the kit, then slip the beads onto the needle and slide them down the thread.  To keep the beads from tangling during the working process and to help measure the amount of beads strung, I cut a piece of cardboard 6”x 8”, cut a small slit at each end of the 8” side.  Unroll at least 1 ½ yards of pearl cotton, slip end closest to the ball into the one slit; begin stringing beads wrapping the strung beads around the cardboard. One turn around the cardboard equals 12”.  6 times around the cardboard will equal the needed 2 yards.  Slip the other end of your pearl cotton into the second slit, you can now safely transport and work with your strung beads without having a tangled mess.
Another helpful hint: place your ball of pearl cotton into a zip lock bag (not the kind with the zipper pull) and zip it closed with the working thread coming out of the bag.  This will help keep your pearl cotton clean and will keep it from rolling away from you while knitting.
