Class Descriptions

Knit a Sock inside a Sock
When: February 2nd, 16th
Time: 10:00am- 12:00pm
Cost: $60.00 plus cost of SuppliesIn “War and Peace” (c.1860’s) Tolstoy wrote of Anna Makarovna who, upon completing a knitted pair of stockings, would astound the children around her by pulling a second stocking from within the other. In 1875 a US patent was filed for “Improvement in the Art of Knitting Stockings and Other Articles” which detailed the technique of knitting two stockings at once, one inside the other. In 1918 the pattern for knitting two socks inside each other was published in
Needlecraft magazine. In this class you will knit a pair of socks using this interesting Victorian technique.
It’s not as difficult as it sounds and it will give you an opportunity to learn two handed knitting without the pressure of following a pattern chart.Class Requirements:
Intermediate; you should be comfortable working in the round on double point or 12” circular needles. Having previously completed a sock would be helpful but not necessary.Homework:
There will be homwork please check back.Materials:
Sock Yarn of your choice at Sweitzers Countryside 100 – 120 grams (approx 420 yards)
Note: If you have a single skein of yarn you may find it extremely helpful to
wind it into two separate balls.
2 sets of double point or 12” circular needles a size that will yield a gauge of 16 st and
20 rounds = 2” in double knitted stockinette stitch. Use your yarn label gauge as
a starting point for needle size selection
Small Cable needle for working heel and toe decreases

Double Knitting
When: January 22nd & 23rd
Time: 6:00pm- 8:00pm & 10:00am- 12:00pm
Cost: $40.00 plus cost of SuppliesIn this class we will be learning a different technique for knitting with color. Double knitting creates a completely reversible fabric that shows the knitted design in a positive image on one side of the work and a negative image on the opposite side. With other charted color techniques you must concern yourself with carrying the unused color along the back of your work, which can frequently cause issues with your gauge. With double knitting you are working both colors together there is no stranding or wrapping involved, therefore gauge is not affected. Plus since the garment is completely reversible you get two looks for the price of one. We will begin the class by making a small coaster, then you can choose your own project from Double Knitting, reversible two color designs by M’Lou Baber (School House Press), use the scarf pattern I will have available, or create your own design from any simple design chart of your own.
Materials Required:
US size 6 knitting needles (The scarf is knit on size 10 ½ US needles)
2 skeins DK or worsted weight yarn, one skein of each complementary color. I used Bella DK for the scarf in color 12090 Brown and 12158 Pale Green. The headband and coasters were also knitted using Bella.
Homework:
If you have a chance, look at M’Lou Baber’s book for inspiration!
